2021 Domaine Burguet Gevrey-Chambertin ‘Mes Favorites’

The Gevrey-Chambertin Everyone's Talking About: 2021 Domaine Alain Burguet Mes Favorites

Burguet’s ‘Mes Favorites’ Gevrey-Chambertin brilliantly shows off this highly-regarded estate’s classic house style – rich, lushly textured, and immediately delicious, but able to improve in the cellar for years.

In his seminal book The New French Wine, writer Jon Bonne said this wine "shows a black-tea-and-bayberry generosity that is (dare I say) reminiscent of Henri Jayer’s pure-flavored style.” Jayer is one of the greatest vignerons in the history of Burgundy. and today, his wines fetch $5,000+!

This won’t run you anywhere close to that....

Classically complex Red Burgundy. So incredibly good!!!

When Alain Burguet started his estate in the early-1970’s, he owned multiple tiny parcels, but not enough to create any single vineyard wines. Like children, he loved all these sites equally, and the name of this cuvee was born. Despite the fun name, this is a serious wine that relies on old vines.

Today, Alain’s sons Jean-Luc and Eric produce Mes Favorites from 30 small and certified organic plots in Gevrey-Chambertin, and the average age of vines is 75 years-old. The Burguets are always among the last to harvest, they employ a meticulous, berry-by-berry sorting, they de-stem everything, they ferment with native yeasts, and they age this wine for 18 months in French oak.

The result is one of the top 2 or 3 Gevrey-Chambertin values I’ve ever tasted, and I drink a lot of Red Burgundy. A mix of perfectly ripened cherry, plum, dark berries, forest floor, dark flowers, smoked meat, and spice serves as a very Gevrey-like introduction on the nose. Equally impressive on the palate, this is rich and powerful with caressing and palate-coating, medium-bodied flavors. Very, very good!

In the words of Burgundy guru Allen Meadows, aka Burghound, this “is very good for its level.” When I need advice on which Burgundies to buy, as I often don't get to try before I buy, I rely heavily on Mr. Meadows, whose Burgundy palate is second-to-none. He went on to say this would drink well from 2027 to 2040. I'm sure it's got the stuffing to go the distance, but it tasted amazing when my staff and I tested out a bottle last week.

My only complaint was that the bottle should have been bigger 😊 By the time this reached its peak expression, there was no more to be had. If you love Red Burgundy and/or Pinot Noir even half as much as I do, take advantage of this offer before I buy it all!
