In case you wanted to see the offerings this year, here they are:
1. NV Domaine du Prieure Cremant de Bourgogne Brut (Burgundy, France): Sparkling wine doesn't just work well before the meal, it works well with the meal. This blend of equal parts Pinot Noir and Chardonnay is made just like Champagne, and it tastes like Champagne too, it just comes from Burgundy. Offering up wonderful notes of pear, apple, marzipan, and chalky mineral, it's one of the top sparkling wine values in the shop.
2. 2023 Cederberg Chenin Blanc (Burgundy, France): South Africa does Chenin Blanc really well, and it has become one of the country's signature white varieties. The fine folks at Cederberg produce as fine a version as any, and here's a wine that shows a nice balance of ripe fruit and zesty acids. With aromas and flavors of apple, pear, lemon, and mineral, it's a natural fit for the holiday feast.
3. 2022 Vignerons de Buxy Bourgogne-Cote Chalonnaise (Burgundy, France): Unoaked Chardonnay loves turkey, stuffing, and all of the fixings, and that's exactly what you get here. Not only is this delicious, it's a serious value in super tasty White Burgundy. Medium-bodied, fleshy, and bright, it exhibits notes of spiced apple, pear, ripe citrus, and honeysuckle. Delicious!
4. 2023 Arnot-Roberts Gamay (El Dorado County, California): Duncan Arnot and Nathan Roberts continue to wow us with their entire range of wines, but their Gamay really blew us away this year. From an old patch of high elevation Gamay planted by Steve Edmunds in the 1980's, this is the ultimate Thanksgiving red. Medium-bodied, silky, and flowing with righteous flavors of spicy cherry, cranberry, brown spice, and forest floor, it's custom-made for turkey, ham, and earthy sides.
5. 2021 Prandi Giovanni Barbera d'Alba (Piemonte, Italy): With its naturally-low tannin and high acidity, Barbera works incredibly well with poultry, pork, and starchy side dishes. This one comes from a tiny, family-run, certified organic estate, and it's just a joy ride of a wine. Displaying pleasure-bent notes of ripe plum, blueberry, raspberry, and violet, it's got plenty of body, but the tannins are super fine-grained.
6. 2020 Foxglove Zinfandel (Paso Robles, California): Domestic Zinfandel is one of the all-time great domestic reds for this American holiday. Brothers Bob and Jim Varner craft their Zin with minimal intervention -- organic farming, native yeasts, and no new oak. The resulting wine has plenty of body, but it's light on its feet and fresh with aromas and flavors of brambly raspberry, dark cherry, peppery spice, and mellow earth.
