Saint Veran is more popular than ever, and I totally get it! This revered AOC in the southern part of Burgundy is one of the last bastions of high quality, great value White Burgundy. The single vineyard bottling from Domaine Thevenet remains a personal favorite of mine as well as one of the great values of the region.
Their Clos de l'Ermitage Vieilles Vignes is the top white wine produced at the estate, and it is produced from 80+ year-old vines. In the wonderful 2022 vintage, it turned out wonderfully -- deeply concentrated yet vibrant and vivacious, it's an absolute stunner of a wine.
Just 1,000 cases of this old vine cuvee are produced each year, and even less makes it to the US. We snagged all 10 cases (120 bottles) that made their way to WNC. They will be gone in a flash!

A glass of Thevenet's Clos de l'Ermitage Saint Veran is a study in old vine Chardonnay grown in rocky, limestone soils. This intense and powerful white wine is in fine form this vintage, and that old vine style is on full display. As vines get older, they produce less fruit, their skins get thicker, and the wines they produce have more depth, character, flavor, and complexity.
The Thevenet family own the entire Clos de l'Ermitage site, and they are the only producer to make wine from this vineyard. This south-facing plot of vines gets plenty of sunshine, and under these conditions, the grapes achieve optimal ripeness. Many producers would age this in oak, but not the Thevenets -- they ferment and age this one in concrete vats to preserve purity and terroir character.
I tasted this one last week, and all I can say is that everything seemed to go right for this wine in 2022. Full bodied, super expressive, and showing aromas and flavors of ripe pear, golden apple, lemon curd, honeysuckle, jasmine, and mineral, this is what Saint Veran is supposed to taste like. Even better, despite the wine's weight and intensity, it remains light on its feet due to its refreshing acidity.
This always sells out fast whenever we can get our hands on it, and the 2022 will be no exception. If you manage to get some, enjoy a bottle with scallops, lobster, or crab for a decadent dining experience. No food required though.....
Just 120 bottles up for grabs. You know what to do next!
