Stellar Alexander Valley Cab: 2019 Trig Point Cabernet Sauvignon 'Diamond Dust Vineyard'

Stellar Alexander Valley Cab: 2019 Trig Point Cabernet Sauvignon 'Diamond Dust Vineyard'

I know we're in the dog days of summer, but you all love good Cab all year long! The 2019 Trig Point 'Diamond Dust' Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is definitely good....no, it's actually great!

The Diamond Dust Vineyard sits on a bench land site in the Alexander Valley, and it's not far from some  prestigious vineyards that provide grapes for a very well-known winery whose wines sell for $75+. The gravelly, well drained soils of this site yield a formidable but graceful Cabernet that drinks like a $50+ wine, but it's coming to you at less than $25!

After flying the globe for many years as a winemaker for a number of prestigious wineries, Nick Goldschmidt decided to settle down to his own winery with his wife Yolyn in 1998. Today, Nick and his family oversee the farming of 59 acres in Sonoma's Alexander and Dry Creek Valleys. Nick holds the Diamond Dust Vineyard in high regard, and has worked with this site for many years. It was the predominate vineyard for Simi's Cabernet Reserve program from 1980-1997, and Nick was the head winemaker during those years.

The rocky, loamy soils of this vineyard are uncompromising, and they stress the vines to the max, coaxing out bold and intense aromas and flavors. Farming is done without the use of chemicals, and Nick uses an integrated approach that incorporates organic and biodynamic practices. Whatever he's doing, all I have to say is BRAVO! His 2019 effort is phenomenal.

Despite the wild ride that Mother Nature dealt Napa and Sonoma in 2019, the vintage actually turned out great. Antonio Galloni of Vinous Media said the "wines feel like they have a little more energy, power and depth than the 2018s. I imagine much of that has to do with smaller berries and higher skin-to-juice ratios." I tasted this wine last week, and I can attest to the quality of the vintage.

Fermented and aged in French, American, and Hungarian oak, this one pours a deep purple color and leads with strong notes of dark cherry, plum, blackberry, anise, dark chocolate, and toasty oak. The flavors mimic the aromas, and this is all offered up on a lush, ripe, and full-bodied palate. There's certainly tannin here, but it's ripe and fine-grained. Translated, this one is drinking great already, but it will continue to offer pleasurable drinking over the next 5-7 years.

Like steak? From a New York strip to a porterhouse, this wine would pair perfectly with a classic steakhouse dinner. It's also great as a "cocktail Cab," so don't feel like you have to have food with it.
