La Cave du Prieure Jacquere 2022

Savoie Specialty: 2022 La Cave du Prieure Jacquere

What a delightfully refreshing and invigorating white wine! The Jacquere grape thrives in the Savoie region of Eastern France, in the foothills of the French Alps. Often referred to as "Mountain Muscadet," this iteration of the grape certainly "behaves" that way.

Even better, at just 11.5% ABV, this bone-dry, minerally little number is the perfect white to stock up on for hot and sunny days. Brimming with mouthwatering notes of tart orchard fruits, citrus, and flinty mineral, I'd happily put this in a blind tasting against the "best-of-the-best" Muscadets. Do not pass this one up just because you haven't heard of the grape. That would be unwise :)

You all love this producer's dry rose -- wait until you taste their flagship white! Talk about a wine that is a paradox of characteristics. It's light in body yet full in flavor, it's low in alcohol but it's completely dry, and it's very easy to drink while at the same time complex. This all adds up to a very pleasurable drinking experience.

Brothers Pascal, Noel, and Julien Barlet have farmed the chalky slopes of Jongieux for 5 generations. They intimately know the land, the soils, the grapes, and they take great pride in their work. That is clearly evident from the first sniff to the last sip of their Jacquere.

Like their rose, this is brought to us by our friends at Asheville-based importer Rise Over Run, a company we are doing a lot more business with these days. Like us, they are dedicated to stocking, promoting, and selling "singular wines from diverse and often challenging sites, and the dedicated families who farm them." Their mission is similar to ours, and there's a real connection between us, them, and the small growers they represent.

Now, back to the wine and what it tastes like. This is a classic Alpine wine -- full of zippy and clean fruit, mountain herbs, and charged with a freshness brought on by steep slopes and elevated sites. The nose is so clean and crunchy, and the palate is too! Stimulating notes of green apple, pear, citrus zest, and flinty mineral come pouring out of the glass. On the palate, this has Muscadet-like energy and precision, but it's got a bit more ripeness and overt fruit. Not better, not worse, just different...and seriously delicious.

What a wine, what a tremendous value, and what a good way to spend your wine dollars. By buying this wine, you help a small family estate, you help an Asheville-based importer, and you help an independent Asheville wine shop. Most importantly though, you help yourself! This is the good stuff, and you will be glad you bought it.
