Smelling this wine gives you an idea of what it's like to stand in the vineyards of Sancerre. Being that the Loire Valley was the first wine zone I ever visited in France, it's an aroma that brings back many great memories. It's also a smell that is the result of the rocky, limestone-rich soils that dominate Sancerre.
Don't worry though, it's not all just rocks and dirt here folks :) I also pick up brisk notes of Bosc pear, tangerine, kiwi, citrus zest, and lemon verbena. Just as great on the palate, there's nice concentration and body here, but there's also that clean and zippy acidity that Sauvignon Blanc is known for.
A blend of fruit from all of Bourgeois' holdings, including some prestigious "stuff" from the best sites in Chavignol, this is the model for what Sancerre is supposed to be. Elegant, restrained, harmonious, and long on the finish, there's a reason why the only white grape grown in Sancerre is Sauvignon Blanc.
The grape thrives in these conditions, and the Bourgeois family have done more than perhaps any other to expose the world to the joys of Sancerre. All I have to say to them is SETTLE DOWN :) Just kidding...kind of...but dang, Sancerre prices are higher than ever, and demand just keeps going up.
