Janasse Cotes du Rhone Reserve

Rock Star Southern Rhone: 2020 Domaine de la Janasse Cotes du Rhone Reserve

On Sale Through 2/11/23! For seasoned wine lovers, buying Cotes du Rhone from a top Chateauneuf du Pape producer is one of the best ways to maximize your wine-buying dollar. That is 100% the case with the 2020 Domaine de la Janasse Cotes du Rhone. From one of the top estates in the Southern Rhone, this is a wine that totally delivers Chateauneuf-like aromas and flavors, but this is both ready to drink, and it will run you a lot less!

Janasse represents one of the elite Chateauneuf producers, and their Cotes du Rhone is clicking on all cylinders this vintage. A blend of old, organically farmed Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, Carignan, and Cinsault, it almost seems like a crime to label this as "just" a Cotes du Rhone. Marrying richness and ripeness with finesse and complexity, it is one of the most complete and formidable CDR's I've tasted in a long time.

Janasse is the stuff of legends. Founded in 1976 by Aime Sabon, the winery is now run by his children Isabelle and Christophe. This is one of those estates where everything is done by hand in a meticulous fashion. Organic farming, hand harvesting and sorting, and native yeast fermentations are the norm here. The overriding "house style" is one that emphasizes pure and ripe Grenache flavors with a pronounced sense of place and complexity.

Right when you pour this into your glass, everything I said in the previous paragraph will make sense. This showcases ripe and forward aromas and flavors of crushed strawberry, blueberry, blackberry, violet, pepper, and garrigue. Quite silky on the palate with ripe tannin and mild acidity, this is completely approachable, charming, and fruit-forward. Yep, fruit is "driving the bus here," but don't think that means this is simple or sweet. Far from it, the spice, floral, and savory notes add interest and complexity.

Domaine de la Janasse was one of the first properties represented by European Cellars, which is run very capably by importer Eric Solomon. "A few years ago, while tasting in their cellar, we sampled a portion of this cuvée out of foudre, and the Cotes-du-Rhone Reserve was born." What's a foudre you ask? It's a large wooden vat that is commonly used in the Southern Rhone. While it does not impart oaky aromas or flavors, it allows the wine to receive tiny amounts of oxygen which in turn gives the wine a soft, rounded, and polished texture.

This is the perfect red to sip fireside on a cold winter's evening. It also loves to be served with hearty French stews.....think coq au vin or boeuf bourguignon. Throw a simple side salad and a crusty baguette into the mix, and you'll think you've been transported to a Parisian bistro. No food required though! Enjoy this stellar Southern Rhone now and over the next 5 years or so. Cheers!
