Domaine Amido makes one of our favorite Cotes du Rhones, but they also make a delicious, value-priced Merlot from vines the family planted back in the 1970's. These old vines soak up all of the warmth and sunshine of the Southern Rhone to yield one of the world's greatest Merlot values.
What the heck is Merlot doing in the Southern Rhone? That was the question I put forth to importer Charles Neal, and he explained that a number of Rhone producers, Amido included, planted Merlot back in the 1970's. Demand for the grape was high in Britain, and Christian Amido bottled Merlot specifically for a supermarket chain in the UK.
Thank God his daughters didn't rip these vines up when Merlot hit hard times (thanks to Sideways) in the early- to mid-2000's. Today, these old vines give us a wine of great substance that comes to you at an incredible price.
- It's straight-up DELICIOUS! Imagine a wine that offers the plush and plummy character of a Right Bank Bordeaux combined with the spicy notes of a Cotes du Rhone. That's what you get here.
- This isn't the most complex bottle of red we sell, but it's certainly not simple, and it DOES NOT taste like a mass-produced Merlot from the grocery store.
- The aromas and flavors are pure, plush, and inviting. Look for notes of warm plum, cherry preserves, and peppery spice on the medium-bodied, supple palate.
- Can you say no-brainer? This is the red wine you want to have on-hand for holiday parties, meals, and casual drinking. Trust me, get a six-pack!
