Courbissac Les Traverses

"Ripe, Opulent, Sexy Personality." 2016 Courbissac Minervois Les Traverses

After tasting this stunning Languedoc red last week, I promptly ordered my supplier's remaining inventory. Jeb Dunnuck nailed it on the head with his review of this stunning red produced from biodynamically tended vines.

Domaine de Courbissac is fairly new on the scene, but this well-funded estate is already producing some of the Languedoc's finest wines. Their Les Traverses bottling is a blend of roughly 1/3 each Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre, and it combines a wonderful refinement with a wild intensity.

Brought to us by importer Eric Solomon, this is a Languedoc red that delivers the goods....and then some. When it comes to Southern French wines with polish, class, and sophistication, Eric Solomon knows how to pick 'em. This is the same guy that brings us the wines of Domaine Lafage, Colline aux Fossiles, and a host of other Table Wine best-sellers. He invested in these lesser-known regions early on, and it has paid off.

Courbissac's 2016 Les Traverses is going to appeal to a broad swath of Table Wine palates. It really does possess a unique personality that Cru Beaujolais and Southern Rhone lovers will adore. Produced from the estate's younger vines, the wine is fermented naturally with partial whole clusters. Bottled without fining or filtration and with minute amounts of SO2, this is a natural wine I can get behind.

Jeb Dunnuck described this wine perfectly. "A blend of equal parts Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre aged 6 months in concrete tanks, the 2016 Les Traverses boasts a deep ruby/plum color as well as a ripe opulent, sexy personality. Plums, black cherries, licorice, garrigue, and chocolate all emerge from this full-bodied, concentrated 2016 that’s loaded with fruit." Yep, it's a delicious, hearty, and spicy red wine perfect for these cold winter nights.

A glass of this, a big bowl of stew, and you've got the makings of a terrific evening. I bought my supplier's last 120 bottles of this one, and I'm offering it up at one of the best prices in the country.
