Let’s start with a little refresher on Domaine de Piaugier. This third generation, family owned and operated estate is one of the serious over-achievers of the Southern Rhone. They do all of the work in their vineyards and cellars the “old fashioned way.” That means organic farming, hand harvesting, fermenting with native yeasts, and bottling with little or no fining or filtration. Their overriding goal is expression of terroir. I’d say they’re doing a fantastic job.
In the balanced and classic 2018 vintage, Piaugier produced lovely, easy-to-drink wines marked by classic Provencal personalities. Their 2018 Gigondas came in as a blend of 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre, and 15% Syrah. The average age of vines is 50+ years old, and the wine is fermented in concrete and then aged for 18 months in older oak foudres prior to bottling.
The resulting wine is one of those that doesn't require much wine knowledge to appreciate. Like Piaugier's other reds, this is fine-grained and elegant yet full-flavored and assertive. Full, ripe, and luscious, this one shows luscious notes of ripe red and dark berries, violet, white pepper, and Provencal herbs. Powerful yet finessed, this is a wine that invokes pure joy.
