Talk about a delicious glass of wine! Telmo Rodriguez, more than any other winemaker in Rioja, coaxes prettiness out of his old, high elevation, Tempranillo grapes. There's subtlety, elegance, and reserve to this wine, but there is also intensity and complexity.
Overall, the estate considers their 2014 Reserva to be a breakthrough wine. Telmo rejoined his family's estate in 2010, but it took a few years for him to get things back in shape. In 2014, everything came together beautifully, and Telmo, his family, and his team believe this to be one of the top Reservas they've ever produced.
A blend of 85% Tempranillo, 10% Garnacha, and 5% Graciano from vines planted between 1939 and 1989, this one is fermented in stainless steel and then aged 21 months in French oak and at least 5 years in bottle before release. Think about that for a second -- Remelluri is doing a lot of the aging for you, and the finished wine is prime drinking shape. Possessing a stunning nose of ripe red berries, violet, cigar tobacco, and spice box, this medium to full-bodied red is silky, fresh, and long on the palate.
With Christmas just around the corner, this would be an amazing red to serve with beef or lamb. Drink some now and cellar some for 5-7 years, and enjoy down the road. Cheers and happy holidays folks!
