Raul Perez Does Garnacha: 2019 Vinedos del Jorco Las Cabanuelas

Raul Perez Does Garnacha: 2019 Vinedos del Jorco Las Cabanuelas

When my sales rep Drew Summer of Advintage Distributing told me he had a new Garnacha made by Raul Perez, one of the top winemakers in the world, I got pretty excited. Raul is one of the top winemakers in the world, and when Drew told me his new Garnacha would retail for less than $20, I got downright giddy.

I tasted this new wine with Drew just the other day, and it absolutely floored me. A lighter, fresher, and more aromatic version of Garnacha, this "behaves" like a fuller-bodied Pinot Noir. If you look for purity, elegance, finesse, and deliciousness in your red wines, you're going to love this one.

I've never had a Raul Perez wine I didn't love, and this Garnacha is the cheapest way to get one of his wines in your glass. Vinedos del Jorco got its start in 2009 when Raul teamed up with three of his buddies to produce wines in the Gredos zone, just outside of Madrid. The focus from day one was on high elevation, old vine Garnacha.

The so-called “Garnacha Belt” west of Madrid is one of the most exciting and unique viticultural zones in Spain. The higher elevation sites are cooler and yield wines that showcase the Pinot Noir-side of Grenache. I'm talking fine, high toned, and mineral-infused wines with ripe yet bright notes of red fruits. There is an elegance and finesse here that is rarely encountered in often plump and opulent varietal.

If you study Garnacha/Grenache, you will find that some of the most sought after wines are grown in sandy soils. Rayas and Chapelle St. Theodoric, two of the finest Chateauneufs out there, both are produced from old vines grown in sandy soils. That is the case with Las Cabanuelas too. Made with grapes grown in the sandy, granite/slate soils throught the Cebreros zone, the wine is fermented naturally in concrete and then aged for 6 months in used French oak.

The vineyards are all farmed organically without herbicides and pesticides and according to the lunar cycles - in part following concepts of biodynamics. Raul makes these wines with his great touch, producing fresher and lighter wines with great finesse, refinement, and intensity of fruit.

In a nutshell, this is Garnacha with grace. A great summer red to enjoy with burgers, it's also superb by itself. I like to serve it slightly chilled. Sounds good right? Trust me, it is!
