Cantina Frentana is one of Central Italy’s oldest and most respected cooperatives. Based in Abruzzo, they make great Montepulciano and Trebbiano, but I am quite partial to their Cococciola, a rare white grape that produces distinctively delicious wines.
Often compared to Sauvignon Blanc, with it's citrus and herbal freshness, I get the comparison, but I think it's got a personality all its own. More floral-scented, more straw-colored, and a bit riper than Sauvignon Blanc, it's a great alternative to fresh and unoaked whites like....yes, Sauvignon Blanc, but also Pinot Gris, Gruner Veltliner, and Albarino.
2023 Vallevo Cococciola -- Here's why you should buy it:
- This is a quintessential springtime white! Refreshing, thirst-quenching, and ideal for sipping on the porch on bright and sunny days, you're going to fall in love with it.
- It's just as fun to say Cococciola as it is to drink it. It almost sounds like "Coca Cola," but the proper pronunciation is more like "coe-koch-cho-lah." Say that 3x fast :)
- The aromatics are delightful. I pick up notes of mixed citrus, melon, pear, green herbs, white florals, and spice. It's not a shy bouquet at all, it's quite intense.
- Equally charming on the palate, it's dry, vibrant, and fresh. The flavors are zesty, bright, and refreshing, calling you back for sip after sip.
- Try it with clams steamed with garlic and white wine. It also loves spicy Asian fare!
