2021 Buondonno Rosso Toscana

Powerful and Structured Sangiovese: 2022 Buondonno Rosso Toscana

Buondonno Rosso Toscana

Josh here, and I'm just going to say it. Gabriele Buondonno has crafted one of the top Sangiovese values in the world. It sounds like a stretch, but I swear that this stuff looks, smells, and in many ways tastes like Brunello or at least a top flight Rosso di Montalcino.

At $21.99, the regular price, it's a great value, but at $16.99, it's an astounding deal. Based in Castellina, in the southwestern corner of Tuscany, Gabriele and his wife Valeria work with old vines, farm organically, and make their wines with minimal intervention.

I thought it would be hard to top the wonderful 2021 vintage of this wine, but I think the Buondonnos did exactly that. Drink this wonderful Sangiovese now with hearty fare, and be sure to decant it. You can also lay some down for up to a decade in a cool cellar.

2022 Buondonno Rosso Toscana: Why should you buy it?

  • It's quite a "serious" wine, with some of the structure found in a Brunello! This acid and tannin is balanced by ripe and rich fruit -- look for notes of dark plum, sweet black cherry, sage, violet, leather, and amaro-like nuances.
  • The 2022 vintage was a very good one in Tuscany. Hot, dry, and sunny, these optimal growing conditions endowed this wine with its powerful personality.
  • Located in Castellina in Chianti, home to Tuscan titans such as Castellare, Fonterutoli, and Rocca delle Macie, Buondonno is the estate that all of the "cool kids" are talking about.
  • Brand new to the US, their wines are slowly being discovered and loved. Our advice, buy now before the prices go up. We guarantee you they will!

I'm thinking this would be amazing with rich and rustic dishes like Bolognese, sausage and peppers, or Sunday gravy over pasta. Yum!
