Joao Portugal Ramos is one of Portugal's best winemakers, and he is responsible for putting modern Portuguese wine on the world stage. Long before he started making wines under his own label, he was consulting for wineries throughout Portugal, helping usher in a new era focused on lower yields, better vineyard practices, cleaner winemaking, and preserving the natural character of the grapes.
Today, he runs his own winery near Estremoz, and his wines are revered both at home and abroad. We are big fans of the Ramos Reserva because it delivers the perfect balance of Old and New World flavors and style. His Reserva blends native Portuguese grapes with a healthy dollop of Syrah to create a red that drinks well above its low price point.
