In the second half of 2024, Broadbent's Douro Reserve Red Blend went on a hot streak, becoming one of our 3 top-selling reds in the $20-$25 price range. I was certainly delighted, as I've been touting the virtues of non-fortified Portuguese wines since I opened the shop. On the other hand, I was intrigued and surprised, as it's made with lesser-known grapes grown in a region known for sweet wines.
I had to investigate further, and over the holidays, I brought a bottle home to enjoy with beef stew. From the first pour, sniff, and sip, it all became clear. This stuff is absolutely delicious, and its flavors parallel many of those found in $40+ Cabs, Malbecs, and Red Blends. Full-bodied, dark-fruited, and firm yet polished, with round and luxurious tannins, it's a lot of wine for the money.
We just took shipment of 7 cases (84 bottles), and we have another 84 bottles on-hold. So that's 168 bottles up for grabs at deal pricing, and our deal pricing is quite good.
2019 Broadbent Douro Reserve -- Why should you buy it?
- This is the kind of chewy, concentrated, and full-bodied red you want in your glass on these cold winter nights we're having. Flowing with sun-kissed notes of ripe plum, blueberry, Asian spices, pepper, mint, and well-integrated French oak, it finishes long and satisfying.
- It's made by the legendary Luis Sottomayor, one of the Douro Valley's most talented and awarded winemakers. This native-born son of Portugal has crafted some of the country's most highly-rated fortified and unfortified wines, and his expertise is on full display here.
- A blend of Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, Touriga Franca, and Touriga Nacional, this sees 12 months of aging in French oak (25% new). The finished wine is a dark-fruited masterpiece with fine-grained structure and good complexity.
- Portuguese wines are still being "discovered" by wine lovers worldwide, but I can only guess their popularity is picking up elsewhere too. Translated, buy them now while prices are low.
This went very well with my homemade beef stew, and I think it would also pair perfectly with grilled or braised meats or strongly-flavored cheeses. No food needed though, pour yourself a glass of this and sip slowly with a roaring fire going in the back ground!
