2015 Sant'Evasio Barbera d'Asti - Table Wine - Asheville, North Carolina

Outstanding Barbera - Under $10/bottle

Let’s start the year off right, with an awesome offer on the 2016 Cantina Sant’Evasio Barbera d’Asti! The 2016 vintage was great in Italy’s Piemonte region, and Barbera-specialist Cantina Sant’Evasio produced one of the great values of the harvest.

Sure, you could serve this with simple pizza or pasta with red sauce, but it’s got an added layer of depth and character rarely encountered in this price range. Flowing with gorgeous and silky notes of red and black cherry, complex spices, and subtle earth nuances, it drinks well above it’s price point.

Barbera often goes overlooked in the Piemonte, no doubt due to the fame of Barolo and Barbaresco. But when it’s done right, it’s one of the most satisfying red wines on the planet. And Sant’Evasio does Barbera right! This third-generation, family-owned estate takes the grape seriously, and their 2016 Barbera d’Asti is a wine that could sell for $20/bottle.

As I said earlier, Vintage 2015 was a great one in Italy’s Piemonte region. As Wine Spectator reported, the hot, dry, and sunny conditions had producers reporting “that quality is high across all areas and grape varieties in the Langhe.” But Barbera, with its ability to maintain freshness and acidity even in the warmest of year, really thrived in 2016.

You’ll detect that right away when your pour yourself a glass of this one. It shows a lovely, deep red color that leads into a classic nose of dark cherry, plum, juniper berry, and spice. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is round and plush, yet there’s just enough acidity there to keep everything freshy-fresh. There’s an impeccable balance and harmony to this wine that really floored me. And don’t think you have to drink your entire case in a month — you can drink this one over the next 3-5 years.
