Sesti Monteleccio 2021

One of Montalcino's Top Deals: 2021 Sesti Monteleccio

On Sale Through 8/5/23 -- Sesti's Monteleccio offers a tantalizing taste of the family's world-class Brunello at a fraction of the price.

The reason for the elegance and deliciousness of this bottling is no mystery: Elisa Sesti uses Brunello-quality Sangiovese to make the Monteleccio. The only difference is Elisa bottles the Monteleccio after one year of aging rather than the three for Brunello.

This shorter aging in oak typically yields a fresh and charming rendition of Sangiovese Grosso. In the hot, dry, and very high-quality 2021 vintage, however, Sesti's Monteleccio is quite deep, layered, and complex. If you love classic and delicious Tuscan reds, you're going to lose your mind when you try this. Just 60 bottles up for grabs...

Sesti is a bastion of tradition. Despite the winery's relatively recent foundation (1987), father and daughter Giugi and Elisa Sesti make their wines the "old way." That means biodynamic and organic farming, hand harvesting and sorting, native yeast fermentation(s), and aging in traditional botti (huge oak casks).

Elisa’s primary concern is the "materia prima," or raw material, that goes into the wine. That's why she and her father spend more time in their vineyards than they do in their cellar. Great wine requires great grapes, and this same philosophy can be seen in all of the best wines in the world.

In the hot and dry 2021 vintage, one which many are comparing to 2001, the Sesti's got some seriously great grapes. You can smell, taste, and feel the virtues of this hot year with every sip of this wine. It honestly offers up a lot of the same notes as Sesti's Brunello, but it's not nearly as tannic and structured. That's a good thing!

100% Sangiovese Grosso from Sesti's younger vines, this pours a gorgeous deep-ruby color and offers up aromas of warm cherry, raspberry, dried herbs, leather, and dark chocolate. Rich and sumptuous on the palate, Sesti's Monteleccio tastes a lot like it smells....DELICIOUS! It's also quite long on the finish, a testament to the "materia prima" I alluded to earlier.

I look forward to enjoying a bottle of this with roasted chicken and wild mushroom polenta. If I'm feeling lazy, I'll pick up a pizza from Del Vecchio's or Fahrenheit...that would work too, but no food required though.

With Brunello like aromas and flavors at less than $40, this will be a hot ticket item. 60 bottles up for grabs. You know what to do now...
