Andre Bonhomme Macon Villages Vieilles Vignes 2018

On Another Wavelength: 2021 Andre Bonhomme Macon-Villages

After a long absence from our shelves, Andre Bonhomme's incredible Macon-Villages is back, and it's better than ever. Heads up folks, there will not be a lot of 2021 Burgundy available. The vintage was a very high quality one, but spring frosts wreaked havoc on the vines, and producers lost 50-75% of their grapes.

Produced from 50+ year-old, organically farmed vines, this is not your typical fresh and simple Macon-Villages. Far from it, this is fleshy, ripe, layered, and quite sophisticated. We were lucky to get a 14 case allocation, and this stuff will go fast. I seriously doubt we'll have any left by the time New Year's Eve arrives.

Domaine Andre Bonhomme is responsible for some of the finest white wines produced in Southern Burgundy. Founded in 1956, this legendary estate was one of the first to estate-bottle their own wines, opting not to sell their grapes the local cooperatives. This was a risky endeavor and one that Andre's peers thought was a foolish decision. They were wrong, and Andre was right. The rest is history. Today, this estate is an icon, and it is now run by Andre's daughter Jacqueline and her husband Eric Palthey.

The Macon region is a somewhat misunderstood one. It is typically associated with fresh and simple Chardonnays that are made in bulk, but not all Macons are created equally. One sniff and sip of Bonhomme's Macon-Villages, and you'll know exactly what I'm talking about. As with all great wines, the greatness is in the details. Organic farming, low yields, hand harvesting, and long aging on the lees in tank all contribute to this wine's magnificent character.

Golden in color and fleshy and rich on the palate, this richness is balanced by zesty acids to create a wonderfully balanced drinking experience. Offering up lovely aromas of golden apple, lemon curd, buttered citrus fruits, white flowers, and mineral, this tastes just as good as it smells. Fresh and lively on the palate despite its richness, this offers up an amazing texture due to its long lees aging. Long and satisfying on the finish, I really can't find anything negative to say about this wine.

To be able to drink White Burgundy from a legendary estate at less than $25 is pretty much unheard of these days....unless you shop at Table Wine :) Enjoy a bottle or 6 this holiday season, but consider stashing some for future enjoyment. The Bonhomme family recommend sitting on this one for 5 years before opening. That's your call, but I've had older bottles of this wine, and they are wonderful. Cheers and keep drinking the good stuff in Asheville, North Carolina!
