This is the debut vintage of Trefethen's Eshcol Red! This classy and attractive Bordeaux-inspired blend is a great successor to their Double T Red Blend, which the winery is no longer making.
An enticing blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot, and the balance in Petit Verdot, Malbec, and Cabernet Franc, this red is ripe and smooth yet elegant and balanced. Translated, it's not just a big fruit bomb. There is plenty of complexity and class here as well.

I'm in love with this new red blend from Trefethen, and if you like sophisticated and classic Napa reds, you will be too. The fruit is ripe and rich, the oak treatment is sensible, and the finished wine is beautifully polished and easy-to-like. You just can't ask for much more out of an estate-grown wine from one of Napa's most tried and true estates.
Even better, Eshcol is an estate-grown wine, as all of the fruit comes from Trefethen's Main Ranch Vineyard in the Oak Knoll District. An estate-grown wine is one in which the producer owns their own vineyards, tends to their own vines, harvests their own grapes, and makes their own wines at their own facilities. The goal at Trefethen is to ensure quality control from the vineyard to the bottle and trust me, the quality is super high on this one.
Fermented in stainless steel and aged for 16 months in French and American oak, this opens with aromas of ripe blackberry, blackcurrant, dried cherry, tobacco, and a hint of oak. Smooth and pleasing on the palate, the flavors are of rich dark berries, mocha, and cigar tobacco. Super classy and a great value as well, Eshcol will provide wonderful drinking now and over the next 5 to 7 years.
You know I love to have wine with food, and I can't wait to enjoy this with a steak or a burger with blue cheese and caramelized onions. Based on our past successes with Trefethen's wines and being that the Double T has been out of stock for some time now, I suspect the response will be strong on this one.
