Not all Nebbiolo needs a decade in the cellar or a Barolo price tag to make sense. Case in point is Abbona’s outstanding Garombello Nebbiolo.
What I love about this wine is that it delivers real-deal Nebbiolo character, but it’s made to be enjoyed now, like tonight! You still get all the classic aromas and flavors, but it comes across on a fresh, fine-grained palate that’s much more approachable than a young Barolo. I love the price too -- just $25!
I pick up classic Nebbiolo notes of dried rose petal, ripe cherry, spice, and a whiff or orange peel on the relatively supple and juicy palate. It's not that there isn't any structure (tannin and acid) here, it's just that those elements are dialed down to a level that your palate doesn't get slapped...like it would with a young Barolo or Barbaresco.
Abbona is one of those quietly serious Langhe producers. You won't hear sommeliers pontificating on their wines, but you'll see Abbona's wines on their lists. Known for making one of Italy's greatest Dolcettos, I think their Garombello Nebbiolo is their secret weapon and their best value.
