G.D. Vajra's Langhe Rosso captures so many of the things I love about the wines of Italy's Piedmont region.
I'm loving the new vintage, as it includes a higher amount of Nebbiolo than past years, giving the wine more depth, more layers, and a little more of that unmistakable Piedmont character.
Vajra's 2024 Rosso comes in as a blend of 54% Nebbiolo, 31% Dolcetto, and the rest a blend of local varieties. Brought up in stainless steel to preserve freshness, this showcases aromas and flavors of red berries, rose petals, savory herbs, a little earthy spice, and that vibrant freshness that makes you want to keep taking another sip.
It should come as no surprise that this is so good. G.D. Vajra is one of Barolo's blue-chip estates, and most of the Nebbiolo here comes from their Barolo vineyards. I'm not going to call it a "Baby Barolo," because that undersells it. It's silkier and lighter on its feet, with bright acidity, soft tannins, and a ton of that Piedmont personality that I love without the Barolo price tag.
I can get behind that, and you should too. A bottle of this with pizza, pasta, mushroom risotto, or just a nice charcuterie spread, and you're living the good life.
