SOLD OUT! For fans of traditionally styled, gutsy Italian reds, you’re going to love the 2015 Marchetti Rosso Conero!
Based primarily on Montepulciano, the key red grape of Italy’s Marche region, this one lights up the palate with full bodied flavors of dark berries, plum, violet and brown spices. Though large and in charge, the tannins are fine and soft making this a great red for sipping with or without food.
2015 Marchetti Rosso Conero
The Marchetti Family have been making wines in the Marche (pronounced Mar-Kay) for over 100 years, and they make some of Italy’s top Montepucliano-based wines. The Rosso Conero DOC is one of the top zones in the Marche, and is located south of Ancona, and just inland from the Adriatic.
The cooling sea breezes, the chalky limestone and clay soils, and the late ripening tendencies of Montepulciano combine to create the ideal situation for producing a rich, yet balanced wine. In addition, the warm and dry growing conditions of the 2015 vintage also added to this wine’s complete character.
A blend of 90% Montepulciano and 10% Sangiovese fermented in concrete and aged for 6 months in French oak, the 2015 Marchetti Rosso Conero “Castro di San Silvestro” is one of my top Italian red wine finds of 2017. Ripe, supple, and pleasure bent, it makes for a perfect cocktail wine. On the other hand, it possesses just enough acidity and tannin to make it a wonderful companion to lasagna, spaghetti and meatballs, or baked ziti. Yep, it’s delicious, it’s versatile with or without food, and it’s less than $20.
