Vina Zorzal Garnacha 2020

Mind Blowing Spanish Garnacha: 2020 Vina Zorzal Garnacha

Luis Gutierrez of Robert Parker's Wine Advocate had some choice commentary on this wine. "The incredibly young and juicy 2020 Garnacha" is "precise, harmonious, elegant and nuanced." He went on to say "this is a steal" and "one to buy by the case."

"Buy by the case" is my advice too, but no pressure. In the world of wine, there are good values and there are extreme values. This is an EXTREME VALUE all the way. Produced with estate-grown, certified organic, super old vine Garnacha, it's hard to put into words how great this wine is. Stupid good comes to mind! When you taste this incredibly polished and finessed Spanish Garnacha, you'll be jumping with joy.

Brothers Xabi, Inaki and Mikel Sanz created Vina Zorzal in 2007. The brothers are young, ambitious, and committed to creating natural wines that are highly drinkable, interesting, and elegant. Their old Garnacha vines are located in Fitero, a subzone of Navarra. The area is marked by hillside sites studded with rocky, stony soils that yield much more interesting wines than those grown in the flatlands of Navarra.

Their goal with this wine is to let the fruit and terroir speak, and I can say with 100% certainty they have achieved their mission. Fermented with native yeasts in tank, this is my idea of the perfect, sub-$20 red wine. It's fresh, it's relatively low in alcohol (13.4%), and it offers pure and delightful Garnacha aromas and flavors. Put simply, it's easy to drink, but it's not a simple wine at all. There's depth and complexity here too.

Almost Pinot Noir-like in its medium-bodied, fine-grained personality, this is a wine I will be drinking a lot of.....while it lasts. It pours a beautiful medium ruby color, and the nose is packed with aromas of pomegranate, cranberry, fresh cherry, white pepper, and floral/herbal nuances. Juicy and mouthwatering on the palate, the tannins are incredibly fine and the finish is long, satisfying, and it keeps you coming back for sip after sip.

One of the finest red wine values I've encountered in 2022, this eerily reminds me of Charvin's legendary Le Poutet Cotes du Rhone, a wine that is hard to get and that will set you back $25+. Good Grenache is a personal favorite of mine, and this one really grabbed me. I highly recommend you grab some for yourself.
