A blend of 69% Syrah, 12% Petite Sirah, 18% Grenache, and 1% Viognier, this “pleasure-centric” red wine just received 92 points from Robert Parker of The Wine Advocate and we wholeheartedly agree with his review. “A killer wine, it offers peppery, cured meat, blackberry, black currant and Provençal herb characteristics in its full-bodied, earthy, deep, chewy, powerful personality. It delivers both flavor and value in incredible proportions. Drink now-2019+.”
Founded in 1979 by Chris Bilbro, he named the winery after his Great Aunt Marietta who taught Chris as a kid about simple, good cooking, hard work and honesty. Today, Chris (or Christo as his aunt called him) continues to run the day-to-day operations of the winery with help of his two sons Jake and Sam. When the boys aren’t making wine, they enjoy hunting big game which they bring back to California to cook up. Friends in California tell us their feasts are some of the best ever, and we could imagine this wine being very at home with all sorts of meats, whether they be grilled, roasted, or braised.
Marietta Cellars Christo is made with a blend of fruit from Mendocino and Sonoma County vineyards. The wine pours a deep, opaque color and smells of ripe dark berries, pepper and lavender leading into a palate of saturated blueberry, blackberry, violet and assorted spices and herbs. Super full bodied, rich, and packed with flavor, trust us when we say that this easily competes with wines at 2 to 3 times the price.
So whether you’re a fan of the big, ripe, full flavored wines of California or the spicy, earthy, herbaceous wines of the Rhone Valley, this one is going to make you really happy.
