The Oak Knoll District is responsible for producing some of the best Chardonnay in the Napa Valley, and the rendition from Materra is a prime example. Located less than 2 miles east of Trefethen, this winery is fairly new on the scene, but their Chardonnay is beginning to get noticed, and for good reason.
Winemaking is handled by Chelsea Barrett, and winery management is overseen by Harry Heitz. If those last names sound familiar, it's because their parents and grandparents helped establish Napa Valley as one of the world's most prestigious viticultural zones. Chelsea is the daughter of Bo Barrett (and Heidi), winemaker at Chateau Montelena, and Harry is the son/grandson of the folks who founded Heitz Cellars.
Great story, I know, but the proof is always in the glass, and there is serious righteousness in the glass of this beautifully balanced and high-class Chardonnay.
2021 Materra Chardonnay Oak Knoll District -- Here's why you should buy it:
- The Oak Knoll District is perfectly situated to produce world-class Chardonnay. Located at the mouth of the Napa Valley, it enjoys moderate temperatures maintained by cool breezes off the Bay. This allows the fruit to ripen slowly, maintaining freshness and aromatic lift, all while developing a supple mouthfeel.
- Whereas Trefethen produces 25,000 cases of Chardonnay each year, Materra only produces about 1,500 cases. When it comes to wine, smaller often means better, as there's a more hands-on approach to things. That's definitely the case at Materra.
- Fermented in stainless steel and aged for 10 months in French oak (28% new), this is well-balanced, vivid, round, and delicious. If you love Trefethen, and I certainly do, I highly advise you to jump on this offer.
- Stylish and balanced are the two words that best describe this Chardonnay. There's certainly richness here (pineapple, lemon curd, spice), but there's lift as well (tangerine, citrus zest, ginger). It all adds up to a balanced and very enjoyable glass of wine.
