2021 De Wetshof Limestone Hill Chardonnay

Lithe, Zesty, Mineralic: 2021 De Wetshof Limestone Hill Chardonnay

For fans of unoaked Chardonnays, this is the ticket! Danie De Wet is the pioneering producer of Chardonnay in South Africa, and his 2021 Limestone Hill bottling will appeal to those who like pure and fresh Chardonnays like those found in the Maconnais region of Burgundy.

Located in Robertson, the De Wetshof Estate is one of the premiere Chardonnay producers in the Southern Hemisphere. Their Limestone Hill Chardonnay is the estate's unoaked bottling, and it showcases bright and tangy fruit, along with a complex mineral underpinning for which the wine is named. Rated 90 points by both Wine Spectator and James Suckling, this is a great bottle of Chardonnay at a great price.

Danie De Wet, along with sons Johann & Peter, crafts pure and elegant Chardonnays from their estate vineyards in Robertson, South Africa. Like the soils found in many parts of Burgundy, the De Wetshof estate vineyards  lie on heavy clay soils, rich in limestone. These soils are ideal for allowing Chardonnay to emit its optimum varietal expression.

This is 100% Chardonnay, 100% stainless steel fermented, and 100% elegantly drinkable. The De Wets choose to let this wine showcase the pure and unadorned flavors of Chardonnay, and they have more than achieved that goal. This is bright, fresh, and refined Chardonnay, and it is always one of the top unoaked Chardonnay values in the world.

Wine Spectator summed it up nicely: "Pear and pineapple fruit flavors are bright and juicy in this lively Chardonnay. Lithe and zesty, with accents of wet stone, grated ginger and verbena gliding through on the lip-smacking finish." Yep, this is an energetic and high toned Chardonnay that is both super refreshing and interesting as well. There's such a wonderful marriage of ripe fruit and zippy acidity here, and this is a wine that will keep you coming back for sip after sip.

Ideal as an aperitif, this would also be great served alongside shrimp and vegetable skewers, seafood curries, or just a simple rotisserie chicken and a salad. Stock up on this one for your 4th of July festivities. Everyone will love it!
