Jean-Claude Mas is a man on a mission, and his mission is to bring the wines of the Languedoc to wine lovers all over the world. I'd say he's doing a great job of that, as his winery was named European Winery of the Year by Wine Enthusiast in 2020. Press is great, but the proof is in the bottle, and there's a lot to like about this plump and delicious red wine.
When I tasted this with my sales rep last week, my first thoughts were that this smelled and tasted like a Lafage red meets a ripe and modern Rhone. I expected my cost to be $15 to $20, but when my rep told me the price, I had to maintain composure. Seriously folks, this is a ton of Southern French red wine for the money.
Deeply colored and boasting an intense nose of warm blackberry, blueberry, spiced plum, Provencal herbs, olive, and pepper, this is super concentrated and packed with flavor. Despite the wine's larger than life personality, it is soft and silky on the palate. Even better, all of the acreage cultivated for this wine is farmed organically.
What more is there to say? Not much, other than that this would be a real treat served with your Memorial Day feasts, but no food is required. Stock up on this one, and wow your friends and family with a wine that punches way above it's "price class."
