2021 Time Place Wine Co. Cabernet Sauvignon

Josh's Top Napa Cab Deal: Time Place Wine Co. Cabernet Sauvignon

If you've loved Time Place's wonderful Pinot Noir, wait until you try their excellent 2021 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon! From the fantastic 2021 vintage, one that Wine Spectator rated 97 points overall, this is my pick for the best sub-$40 Napa Cab in the shop. Just 800 cases were produced, and I just snagged my distributor's last 14 cases.

Just like the Pinot Noir, this has a gorgeous label, a highly respected and veteran winemaker, and a great story. Most importantly though, it offers up unparalleled QPR (quality-to-price ratio).

2021 Time Place Wine Co. Cabernet Sauvignon

Elegant and Luxurious Napa Cab at a fantastic price!

Before I get into that beautiful label and the story of the Time Place Wine Co., I want to first tell you why I bought such a big pile of this one. To put it bluntly, this totally out-drinks a lot of big name, widely available, and heavily-marketed and pricier Cabs by a lot.

For those who use the Vivino app, they've got this one rated 4.3 stars, and the best price they list is $45.02. The reviews say things like incredibly smooth, exceptional for the price, complex flavors, and more, and I have to agree with all of those opinions. I'll add that when I first tasted this, it kind of reminded me of what Caymus used to taste like, before they "changed the recipe" and went more "broad-market."

Looking over my personal tasting notes, here's my full review: Warm, rich, and inviting nose of cassis, warm cherry, dark plum, vanilla, and cigar box. Quite supple and full-bodied on the palate, the tannins are fine-grained and ripe, the acidity is integrated, the French oak gives the wine its lavish and luxurious style, and the overall style is hard not to like. BUY A TON, and after a bit of negotiating, that's exactly what I did.

Crafted by veteran winemaker Jamey Whetstone, who trained with Ehren Jordan at Turley (among others), most of the fruit comes from top sites and growers in Yountville, and the wine sees 17 months of aging in French oak (50% new). Add to the equation John Duckworth's brilliant photos of specific times, places, and moments of nature in South Carolina's Low Country -- that's what you see on the label.

What a Cab, what a great story, and what a great price! If you love ripe, opulent, and smooth Napa Cabs, you're going to want to get in on this action. Wonderful now with classic steakhouse fare, this will continue to offer great drinking through 2030.
