1. 2023 La Cave du Prieure Jacquere (Savoie, France) – The Barlet brothers are fifth generation growers and producers based in Jongieux. This is cooler, Alpine territory, and the Jacquere grape is a specialty of the region. Light in body yet full in flavor and low in alcohol despite being dry, this brims with notes of pear, green apple, herb, and mineral. It will cool you down on hot days, and it will pair wonderfully with river fish, shrimp, and grilled vegetables.
2. 2022 Domaine Thevenet et Fils Saint-Veran 'Clos de L'Hermitage Saint Claude (Burgundy, France) – The Thevenet family's top white wine comes from a well-exposed plot of 75+ year-old Chardonnay. In their efforts to let that old vine character shine through, they ferment and age in tank with an elevated time on the lies. The resulting wine is deep and concentrated, but it's still totally fresh and invigorating. Classic varietal notes of peach, golden apple, jasmine, and mineral take center stage in this wonderful White Burgundy.
3. 2023 Mas de Valeriole 'Ve' Rose (Provence, France) – This family-run, certified-organic estate has produced a fresh and elegant rendition of rose, and I absolutely love this wine. Composed of Caladoc, Merlot, and Marselan, it flows with delicate notes of cherry, blood orange, rose petal, and more. Decidedly dry on the palate, this finishes with a savory herbaceous note that will keep you coming back for sip after sip.
4. 2023 Domaine Les Aphillanthes 'Nymphea' Cotes du Rhone Rose (Rhone Valley, France) – Farmer and vintner Daniel Boulle runs his certified organic and biodynamic estate with great passion. Located just northwest of Gigondas, he certainly crafts stout and powerful reds, and but I have been a longtime fan of his Cinsault-driven rose. Also containing Grenache, Mourvedre, and Counoise, his Nymphea showcases expressive notes of raspberry, tart strawberry, orange zest, and honeysuckle.
5. 2023 La Cave du Prieure Pinot Noir (Savoie, France) – I love this family-owned and -operated winery so much that I included 2 of their wines here. Wedged in between Geneva to the east and Burgundy to the west, the Alpine terroir of Savoie is proving to be great for Pinot Noir. Prieure's Pinot Noir shows some of fresh and mineral character of a Sancerre Rouge combined with the elegance and complexity of a Red Burgundy. Serve lightly chilled and enjoy with baguette and charcuterie!
6. 2022 Prandi Giovanni Dolcetto di Diano d'Alba 'Sori Cristina ' (Piedmont, Italy) – It's amazing to me that this tiny estate's wines make it to the US, as they only make about 2,000 cases total, and they make five different wines! This is superb Dolcetto that balances juicy freshness with delightfully dry flavors of ripe dark cherry, violet, and peach skin. Try it with BBQ'd chicken or pork!
