1. 2017 Domaine des Cassagnoles Gros Manseng (Gascogne, France) – Stick your nose in the glass of this one, and you’d swear it was Sauvignon Blanc. And year in and year out, this is one of the top white wine values in the world. From the southwestern region of France, this is 100% Gros Manseng planted in silt and chalky soils. Medium bodied and generously textured, with refreshing acidity and notes of spiced citrus, passion fruit, and green herbs, this is going to pair beautifully with turkey, ham, stuffing and green bean casserole.
2. 2017 Tegernseerhof Gruner Veltliner “T26” Federspiel (Wachau, Austria) – 93 points Wine Enthusiast – Martin Mittelbach is a master with Austria’s native Gruner Veltliner grape. From a single vineyard near the Danube, this was originally in Tank #26 the first time importer Klaus Wittauer tasted it years ago. “I want a lot of T26,” Klaus said- and the name has stuck. Showing a terrific balance ripeness, full flavor, and zesty acidity, it kinda’ tastes like Chablis with a bit of peppery spice. “A touch of green herbs plays alongside pear notes on the nose of this wine. The palate adds lemony verve and textured, yeasty notes as well as a touch of white pepper. The finish is clean and long, with that lemony savoriness lingering long.” – Wine Enthusiast
3. 2016 Domaine Cheveau Macon-Chaintré “Le Clos” (Burgundy, France) – Un-oaked, but fuller-bodied Chardonnay like this one is always a safe bet for Thanksgiving. With terrific acidity buttressed by plenty of ripe orchard fruit flavors, it’s a natural partner to poultry and earthy root veggies. This one, from the southernmost village of the Maconnais, shows beautiful purity to the green apple, pear, lemon and floral notes. For fans of wines from Pouilly Fuisse and Saint Veran, you’ll want to give this one a whirl. Just 300 cases make it to the US each year, and I was lucky to snag 7 of those.
4. 2016 Terres Dorees Beaujolais L’Ancien Vieille Vignes (Beaujolais, France) – 91 points Vinous Media – Jean-Paul Brun makes some of my favorite Beaujolais’, and Gamay and the Thanksgiving meal are a match made in heaven. The bright, red fruited flavors work well with cranberry sauce, the light tannin and moderate acidity don’t overwhelm the mellow flavor of turkey, and the subtle earthy/spicy notes work well with the umami-rich flavor of gravy. “Brilliant violet. Aromas of fresh dark berries, candied flowers and smoky minerals pick up hints of allspice and licorice as the wine opens up. Sweet and pliant on the palate, offering vibrant bitter cherry and black raspberry flavors that put on weight with air. Finishes sappy and taut, displaying strong persistence, a persistent mineral note and fine-grained tannins that sneak in late.” – Vinous Media
5. 2016 Arterberry Maresh Pinot Noir Dundee Hills (Willamette Valley, Oregon) – 93 points Wine Advocate – Jim Maresh makes some of Oregon’s best Pinot Noirs, and this is one of the top values of the highly rated 2016 vintage. And Pinot Noir is one of the all time great Thanksgiving wines. “Pale to medium ruby-purple, the 2016 Pinot Noir Dundee Hills has a lovely open nose of warm cinnamon stick, cranberry and baked red cherry pie with black tea leaf and potpourri spice. Light to medium-bodied, it fills the mouth with warm red fruit and layers of baking spice, earth and mineral” – Wine Advocate
6. 2016 Pedroncelli Zinfandel “Bushnell Vineyard” (Sonoma County, California) – 93 points JS – Want to go with something a bit bigger and bolder? Red Zinfandel is the way to go! With its bold, rich, smoky and spicy flavors, it’s a great compliment to the brown spices that abound in the Thanksgiving meal. And this one comes from a top site in Sonoma’s Dry Creek Valley where vines average 80+ years of age. Boasting luscious notes of raspberry, strawberry, dark cherry, pepper and clove, this full-bodied, soft textured red is a winner all the way.
