1. 2018 Penya Cotes Catalanes Blanc (Roussillon, France) – This is the best Viognier value I’ve tasted in a long time. From vineyards just north of the Spanish border, it is fermented in tank and aged on its fine lees for 4 months before bottling. The resulting wine literally tastes like Mediterranean sunshine! Translated, this one is highly aromatic, fresh, and delightful. “Tasting like a mini-Condrieu, the 2017 Côtes Catalanes Viognier offers loads of orange blossom, white flowers, and citrus notes in a rounded, sexy, seamless style.”
Jeb Dunnuck’s notes on the 2017, which scored 90 points — this one is nearly identical!

2. 2017 Le Cirque Grenache Gris (Roussillon, France) – 91 points Jeb Dunnuck – This might be my pick for the top spring white wine of 2019! From 70+ year old, organically tended Grenache Gris vines in France’s warm and sunny Roussillon region, this is one of those rare whites that possesses both body and freshness. The “2017 Côtes Catalanes Grenache Gris is a beautifully salty, racy white that has tons of character. Citrus blossom, salty minerality, and white flowers all emerge from this fabulous white that’s going to be as versatile as it gets on the dinner table.” – Jeb Dunnuck

3. 2018 Penya Cotes Catalanes Rosé (Roussillon, France) – Penya’s dry rosé is almost all Grenache (96%) with just a splash of Syrah, sourced from 35+ year old, organic vineyards. It’s a classic Southern French rosé that shows lovely fruit purity along with zesty acidity. It “gives up notes of citrus, strawberries, and flowers, with a beautiful salinity on the finish. Juicy, lively, tart, and hard to resist, it’s a seriously good rosé that sells for a song.” – Jeb Dunnuck’s notes on the 2017, which scored 89 points — this one is nearly identical!

4. 2015 Le Cirque Rouge (Roussillon, France) – 90 points Jeb Dunnuck – Le Cirque’s red wine comes from the fabulous 2015 vintage and the blend is 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 20% Carignan from 50+ year old vines. Fermentation takes place in concrete tanks, and the resulting wine is super. “The 2015 Cotes Catalanes is another smoking value from the Roussillon region in the south of France. Based on 60% Grenache, 20% Carignan and 20% Syrah, it has a forward, medium-bodied, complex style as well as terrific notes of spices, leather, garrigue and ripe plums. It has no hard edges and is a delicious, Old World fruit bomb to drink over the coming 2-4 years.” – Jeb Dunnuck

5. 2015 Les Darons Languedoc Rouge (Languedoc, France) – 93 points Jeb Dunnuck – Crafted by Parisian-born, all-star winemaker Jeff Carrel, this blend of 75% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 5% Carignan is fabulous. Fermented entirely in concrete, never seeing oak, this drinks like a $30+ bottle of wine. “This medium to full-bodied, plump, rounded, downright sexy 2015 has lots of blueberry, violets, and jammy black cherry aromas and flavors; it has terrific purity of fruit, good acidity and an overriding sense of elegance. If it came from a more prestigious appellation in the southern Rhone, it would go for three times the price.” – Jeb Dunnuck

6. 2017 Domaine Cabirau Cotes du Roussillon (Roussillon, France) – 92 points Jeb Dunnuck – The hits keep on coming, and here’s another stellar value from the Roussillon. A classic blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Carignan, and 20% Syrah, all from black schist soils, this is begging for grilled meat! “Its deep purple, opaque color is followed by a beautiful bouquet of blackberry and blueberry fruit as well as plenty of violets and incense. It’s medium to full-bodied, ripe, sexy, and voluptuous on the palate, with terrific purity.” – Jeb Dunnuck
