I'll be honest, it doesn't taste exactly like White Burgundy, but it's close, and it has that same combination of ripe fruit, bright acidity, and minerality that makes wines from places like Pouilly-Fuisse and Saint-Veran so tasty.
Ripe melon, white peach, citrus, and orange blossom give the wine plenty of fruit and richness, while zesty acidity and a savory, mineral quality keep it fresh and focused. There's a lot going on here, and every sip is a bit better than the last one. I love it!
It makes sense, as this comes from one of the region's great estates. Dan Morgan Lee and his family have been farming the cool, wind-swept hills of the Santa Lucia Highlands for more than 30 years. The afternoon winds and long growing season allow the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly, giving the wines both ripe fruit and the acidity to keep everything lively.
There's real substance here, but this Chardonnay never feels heavy. It's rich enough to satisfy the California Chardonnay crowd, but it has enough acidity and mineral edge to keep Burgundy lovers happy.
At $22.99, the time to stock up on this beauty is NOW!
