Seghesio Old Vine Zinfandel 2022

93-Point, Rocking Good Zinfandel from Seghesio!

For lovers of ripe, rich, and spicy California reds, it doesn't get much better than Seghesio's Old Vine Zinfandel. This veteran producer never misses with this wine, and the it's a wine I can't wait to drink with some BBQ this spring and summer!

Rated 93 points by Wine Spectator, who said it's "like a briar patch in a glass," it's a classically styled California Zin with lots to like.

Let's get right to that Wine Spectator review, as it really captures the spirit of this wine. "This Zin offers spirited raspberry and cherry flavors that take on underbrush, dried sage and white pepper flavors before finishing with zesty tannins. Drink now through 2032." That sums it up nicely, but you can see my personal tasting notes below too.

I want to make sure you know this is not the "regular," blue-labeled Seghesio Zin. It's a great wine, but it's not quite as complete as their red-labeled, Old Vine Zin which is composed of Dry Creek and Alexander Valley grapes averaging 75+ years of age.

These old, gnarled vines give us robust and soulful wines with intense and concentrated aromas and flavors. I tasted Seghesio's 2022 Old Vine Zin last week with my sales rep, and I was very pleased by the wine's classic and bold style. Big notes of warm raspberry, cherry, plum, dried fig, cardamom, herb, and pepper on the nose, and just as enticing on the palate, with good body and concentration and fine-grained tannins. YUM!

“Old Vine” is often loosely interpreted at other wineries, but that is certainly not the case at Seghesio. True old vine Zinfandel is distinguished by head-trained vines with thick, gnarled trunks and vineyard planted with ancient clones dating back to the turn of the century.
