Sisters Paola, Francesca and Anna Rosina bought land in Gavi about 20 years ago. As importer Jay Murrie of Piedmont Wine Imports says, the "Rosina sisters were outsiders," and "enthusiasts without oenological experience." Their lack of experience showed in their early wines, which were serviceable, but not exactly compelling.
That mediocrity all changed in 2015, when the sisters purchased a cellar in the tiny hillside hamlet of Tassarolo, population 600. With the help of oenologist Davide Ferrarese, La Mesma went from passion project to rising star in Gavi. Today, their wines are held in high regard in the region, and you'll find them served in some of the best seafood-focused restaurants in the Piemonte and Liguria.
You'll also find them at your favorite little wine shop in Asheville!
2023 La Mesma Gavi 'Le Rose' -- Why should you buy it?
- It's a sensational rendition of Cortese, the indigenous Italian grape that all Gavis are based upon.
- Lemony citrus, green apple, pear, honeydew melon, and almond make this light, tart, and refreshing white wine perfect for the warmer months.
- We think it's a wonderful and interesting alternative to other fresh whites like Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, and Gruner Veltliner.
- The La Mesma Estate attained organic certification in 2018, they hand-harvest all of their grapes, and the sisters make their wines with minimal sulfur.
A nicely chilled bottle of this with a shrimp and pesto pasta sounds mighty good to me right now! It's also perfect for the beach and "porch sipping" all spring and summer long.
