Robert Craig Howell Mountain Cuvee 2019

Heavenly Howell Mountain Blend from Robert Craig

One of the pioneers of mountain-grown Napa Valley Cab and vineyard development, Robert Craig has crafted a masterpiece of a wine with his 2019 Howell Mountain Cuvee. This blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 7% Malbec and 3% Petit Verdot is the cheapest way to get Howell Mountain Cab into your glass, and it's an absolute rock star of a wine.

This is a wine that overflows with Howell Mountain character, and in 2019, the winery upped the percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon. It's quite a serious bottle of wine and one that I think is worthy of good friends, family, and a standing rib roast. We bought all 10 cases our distributor had in stock, and we're running it at a great price through Christmas Eve 2022.

What a fantastic wine and a fantastic value from one of the masters of Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon. Almost all of the fruit comes from Craig's Candlestick Vineyard, at the top of Howell Mountain. The only real difference between this wine and the estate's $110 Howell Mountain Cab is that their HMC spent less time in new French oak. I'm telling you all, this is the "stuff!"

Robert Craig knows how to grow Cabernet in the mountains of Napa Valley. He was one of the driving forces that planted Cab on Mount Veeder in the 1980's, and he released his first vintage of his own wines in 1992. They were met with immediate critical acclaim, and that is certainly still the case today. I have always enjoyed their Mountain Cabs, but I've never been able to offer them up at a price like this.

As Antonio Galloni said of this wine, "the 2019 is a jewel of a wine and a fabulous value." Yep, he nailed it on the head with that assessment. The addition of Merlot helps to soften the structure of the Cabernet. The resulting wine is one that offers up classic Howell Mountain notes of cherry, currant, mint, pine, and violet. Full, dark, deep, and nuanced, this will offer immediate appeal, but it will also mature and improve over the next decade or so.

Like I said earlier, this wine is built for a grand holiday meal. I'm talking standing rib roast or leg of lamb. Trust me, this is an epic wine deserving of an epic meal and a seasoned palate. Just 120 bottles up for grabs. Act fast!
