Pepiere Muscadet Clisson 2019

Grand Cru Muscadet: 2020 Domaine de la Pepiere Muscadet 'Clisson'

Pepiere's Clisson is the "Rolls Royce of Muscadets," and it's also this iconic estate's top bottling. One of the grandest, richest, and most complex expressions of Melon de Bourgogne on the planet, it's a real treat.

It's been a couple of years since we've gotten an allocation of Domaine de la Pepiere's limited-production Clisson Muscadet. Is it really that good? YES, it is that good! Clisson is always rich, voluminous, and fleshy, but it still has that mineralic intensity that Muscadet lovers adore.

If you were poured this wine "blind" for the first time, you'd probably think it was Chablis or Chenin Blanc of a very high caliber. Trust me, you've never had Muscadet like this...unless you've had Pepiere's Clisson :) I like to think I could "call it" if you poured it blind for me, but I've enjoyed numerous bottles over the years.

This is Muscadet on a very different frequency, and it is one of the most sought after wines of the AOC. Clisson is the village where the Melon grape reaches its apex of expression. The dense granite, gravel, and rocky soils provide good drainage which in turn yield a wine with depth, power, and complexity rarely found in this variety.

Combine those rocky soils with 60-90 year-old vines, and you've got the perfect formula to create a dramatically delicious wine. Pepiere ages this one for a full 24 months on the lies, and this aging is what gives Clisson its fine texture. What makes this wine so compelling is the way it manages to balance weight and complexity with live-wire acidity and complex minerality.

This is world-class white wine that should cost double the price -- I'd still buy it. It also ages incredibly well...like 10 to 15 years, at which point the acidity mellows, the fruit gets a bit richer, and the mineral character integrates.

I've got a great deal price on this because I want you to take a journey with this wine. Have a bottle now with oysters or fuller-flavored fish and seafood dishes, but please lay some down. You will be rewarded for your patience.
