2022 Chappellet Mountain Cuvee Proprietor's Blend
One of Napa's great premium red wine values!
I thought it would be hard for the '22 to compete with the '21, but Chappellet did it. Like every vintage, there's a wonderful balance of ripe fruit, supple texture, and perfectly integrated French oak. Simply put, it drinks like a much more expensive wine, and there's a good reason for that.
Chappellet's vineyards are located on the famed Pritchard Hill, some of the most expensive and coveted vineyard real estate in the Valley. Luckily, the Chappellet family bought their land back in the late-1960's, before this zone gained its pristine reputation and became so sought after. These days, Pritchard Hill wines typically start at $75 and go up to $500+, but not Chappelle's ; )
The '22 comes in as a blend of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Petit Verdot, 14% Merlot, 12% Malbec and 5% Cabernet Franc. Aged for 14 months in French oak barriques, the finished wine is both classy and sophisticated. Full-bodied and deeply-colored, this offers up aromas of currant, cassis, sage, thyme, clove, and allspice. Just as impressive on the palate, the tannins perfectly balance out the lush fruit and add depth to the ripe berry flavors.
What a wine, what a great deal, and what a perfect red to enjoy with grilled meats. With holiday celebrations just around the corner, I recommend you pick some of this up and enjoy with friends, family, and good food. Cheers to happy drinking, eating, and celebrating in the AVL!
