Not all Barbaresco needs to be big and powerful to make an impression. The 2017 Punset Basarin Riserva shows that in a big way, and I am enamored with this wine.

This comes from Punset’s own cellars, where they hold back small amounts of their top wines and release them with some age. I always get excited when I can get my hands on "library releases," and this is a great example of why.
From the Basarin cru, one of the top sites in Barbaresco, this is Nebbiolo with both structure and soul. I love the aromatics here: rose petals, dried cherry, a little spice, then it starts to show more depth with notes of earth, black tea, and leather. It’s elegant, but not delicate, and it's going to be in its prime drinking window through 2030.
2017 was a warm vintage in the Piemonte, but I think Punset handled it beautifully. The wine stays fresh and balanced, with no excess weight, just pure fruit, softened tannins, and invigorating lift. I recommend decanting this, as it will speed up the aromatic and flavor development. Be careful as you get to the bottom of the bottle, as it will likely throw a bit of sediment.
If you’re looking for a Barbaresco that delivers now but still has plenty of depth and staying power, this is the wine for you. Punset continues to fly a bit under the radar, but I can tell you the wines are the real deal.
