Domaine Cosse et Maisonneuve Cahors Solis 2018

French Malbec Done Right: Domaine Cosse et Maisonneuve Cahors Solis

Want to experience the joys of Malbec from its genetic birthplace? Of course you do, and this is about as fine of a version of Cahors as I've ever tasted. From a young and dynamic estate, this is a joyful glass of wine to sip on one of these cold winter nights.

The young team of Matthieu Cosse and Catherine Maisonneuve are really starting to make waves in the fine wine community in the US. When you taste this, you'll understand why. This is fine-grained Cahors with a more elegant structure than usually encountered in the wines from this region. I can't recommend it highly enough.

This is not your typical Cahors. This region, located in the southwestern reaches of France, is most likely the genetic birthplace of Malbec, and the wines produced here are typically described with terms like rustic, potent, and tannic. The Solis Cahors is different altogether; here we have a wine with a softer and juicier core of fruit along with a more graceful and giving structure.

The talented team of winemaker Matthieu Cosse and oenologist Catherine Maisonneuve are the real driving force behind this wonderful estate. The pair took over a Cahors estate 15 years ago and quickly set out to make wines that are the antithesis of the rustic image of Cahors. All of their vineyards are certified organic, but the couple actually farms biodynamically. Everything they do in the vineyard is done with the aim of attaining balanced soils which produce the best ripening conditions for the grapes in order to make harmonious, aromatically complex and precise wines.

They have achieved their goal and then some with their 2018 Solis Cahors. 100% Malbec from the highly acclaimed 2018 vintage, this is a wine of concentration, power, and balance. Though the fruit is ripe, the wine does not come across as jammy at all. Instead, this hits the palate with notes of perfectly ripened blueberry, plum, and blackberry along with hints of violet and herb. Delicious, silky, and flowing with authenticity, this is a big wine that is a little too easy to drink.

Pour it into the biggest glass you have to best enjoy the mesmerizing bouquet, and enjoy this one with a big spread of cheese, charcuterie, and baguette. You can thank me in the morning! Cheers to drinking the good stuff in Asheville, North Carolina!
