If you love rich and robust wines like Old Vine Zinfandel and Valpolicella Ripasso, you are going to lose your mind when you taste the Vecchia Torre Primitivo. One of the finest Southern Italian red wine values in the shop, it should be illegal to sell a wine so good at such a low price.
Lynn and I enjoyed a bottle of this with my Bolognese recently, and it offered up so much more than I thought it would. I was just hoping for a good and rustic red to pair with the meal, but this wine exceeded my expectations and then some. I promptly ordered 14 cases, and we're running a great deal on this one.
2019 Vecchia Torre Salice Primitivo
Almost Amarone-like concentration for less than $15!
I've always been a sucker for Southern Italian reds. They're affordable, they're hearty, and they're people pleasers. Vecchia Torre's Primitivo is that and a whole lot more! Better than many rich, bold, and hearty reds that would run you $25+, the wine's bouquet is honestly reminiscent of Amarone, and I promise you I'm not exaggerating folks!
Vecchia Torre is one of Southern Italy's most trusted cooperatives, and their wines consistently over-deliver in a big way. Many of you know their Salice Salentino, another wine that delivers lots of goodness for not a lot of money. If you have liked that one, you are going to jump for joy when you get their Primitivo in your glass.
Deep, dark, and nearly opaque in the glass, this smells of blueberry liqueur, warm cherry, spicy plum pudding, and peppery spice. Kind of sounds like Ripasso right....heck, it kind of sounds like Amarone. The palate is equally pleasing with ripe and round flavors and just enough acidity to provide a bit of freshness and lift. While my tasting notes might lead you to think this is a bit sweet, it's dry all the way.
If you really want to blow your friends away and provide a prime example of why you shop at Table Wine, serve them this wine. On the same token, if you are having lasagna, pizza, or spaghetti with meatballs in the near future, have this wine with it. You'll thank me!
