Carlos Raposo is a living legend. Born in Portugal, he caught the "wine bug" early, and he made his first wines at the tender age of 16. He went on to work stints in Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Napa before returning home and taking over winemaking at Portugal's famed Niepoort Winery.
It was here, under the watchful eye of the eccentric, charismatic, and non-conforming Dirk Niepoort, that Raposo came into his own. In 2020, he set off on his own path, and it led him back to the Dao region, his birthplace and oft-called the "Burgundy of Portugal." Today, his wines are revered near and far, and his Impecavel is one of the purest and prettiest Touriga Nacionals we've ever tasted.
- Here's a wine with the elegance and silkiness of a Pinot Noir combined with some of the more savory and spicy elements of a Syrah.
- Raposo works solely with small growers who work with old vines and who farm organically and biodynamically. He pays these growers top dollar to make sure the grapes he wants don't go to a co-operative or another producer.
- Master of Wine Julia Harding, who works for British wine legend Jancis Robinson's publication, said it's an "extremely pure expression of Touriga Nacional." She went on to say this "is deliciously floral, with an herbal freshness, and it carries its 13% alcohol effortlessly. The tannins are silky, the whole thing is mouth-watering. It is fantastic quality for the price." We couldn't have said it any better ourselves :)
- Portuguese wines are better than ever, and they're about to blow up worldwide. It's vignerons like Carlos Raposo that are fueling that fire! Get them now before prices go up...
