Aurore Dezat of Domaine des Chasseignes proves the point that you can find incredible, Burgundy-like Pinot Noir outside of Burgundy at a fraction of the price. Her 2022 'Evidence' Sancerre Rouge is the estate's "prestige cuvee," and it is off-the-freaking-charts great!
This is the wine that Madame Dezat is most proud of, the one she puts the most energy into, and the one she makes in the smallest quantities (just 200 cases produced). 100% Pinot Noir from the estate's oldest and best Pinot Noir vines, it is deeply colored, tightly-coiled, and incredibly complex.
This will need a good 3 to 4 hours in the decanter if you want to enjoy it now, but I plan to stash a few bottles away for 7 to 8 years. I am 100% confident that time in the cellar will transform this magical red into one that will go toe-to-toe with many Premier Cru Red Burgundies that would run you $75+!
2022 Domaine des Chasseignes 'Evidence' Sancerre Rouge -- Why should you buy it?
- There are only 48 bottles up for grabs. That's not exactly a great reason to buy it, but I just wanted to make sure you knew.....
- I drink a lot of Red Burgundy, and this is better than many I've paid 2-3x the price for. Deep in color, sumptuous, and powerful, this showcases powerful aromas and flavors of dark red fruit, vibrant floral notes, intense earth and mineral, and judicious spicy oak.
- It's delicious now, but it'll be even better down the road. I drank this over the course of 3 days last week, and it got better each day, but it was best on day 3! This is a big, concentrated, and structured Pinot that shows the more age-worthy side of the grape.
- Want to drink it now? No problem, just wait 3 days :) Just kidding, you'll just need to decant this for a good 3 to 4 hours if you want to drink it now, and you'll want to plan a meal around it. I'm thinking of earthy flavors -- mushrooms, root veggies, slow braised meats and game.
My mouth is watering just thinking about it. Our supplier the Haw River Wine Man got a tiny allocation of this for North Carolina, and I grabbed the lion's share. If you love top-flight Red Burgundy but don't have the budget for it, this is what you want to be buying.
