Drinks Like White Chateauneuf: 2020 Domaine Lafage Cuvee Centenaire

Robert Parker once said of Lafage's Cuvee Centenaire that it possesses “a character that could easily be mistaken as a serious white Hermitage from the northern Rhone.” Bold statement Bob, but whenever I taste this wine, I understand where he's coming from.

Jean-Marc Lafage gets a ton of attention for his reds, but his whites are equally attractive. His Cuvee Centenaire is an old vine blend of Grenache Blanc, Grenache Gris, and Roussanne, and to me, it always tastes like a cross between a top flight White Rhone and White Burgundy. It's a beautiful white wine at less than $15!

Jean-Marc and Eliane Lafage farm roughly 160 hectares of vines located just south of the capital of French Catalonia, Perpignan. The warm and dry climate of the region allows them to farm organically and make everything from rich and lively whites to rugged and full bodied reds. The crazy thing is that they make 10+ different wines, and all of them are fantastic and affordable.

Lafage’s 2020 Cuvee Centenaire is comprised of 95-100+ year old Grenache Blanc (40%) and Grenache Gris (40%) along with 20% Roussanne from younger vines. The grapes come from gravelly soils just a stone's throw from the Mediterranean. It is the combination of old vines, well-drained soils, and the cooling aspect of the sea that make this a white that is both rich and fresh. Fermented in a combination of stainless steel and French oak, the finished wine is really stunning, especially when you consider its humble price point.

The resulting wine possesses that perfect balance of yin and yang. There are ripe notes of white peach, spiced apple, and citrus oils, but there's also pretty aromas and flavors of white flowers, saline minerality, and citrus zest. All in all, it's just a rocking bottle of white wine that will please all sorts of palates.

I highly recommend you take advantage of the deal pricing, and stock up on this one. Once folks get this home and into their glasses, they're going to realize what an insane value it is and be back for more. There's a good chance we'll be sold out by the time that happens.
