Loire Valley natives Nicolas Grosbois and Philippe Mesnier are the two young and talented vignerons behind Domaine des Hauts Baigneux. In 2012, the pair purchased 13 hectares in the underrated commune of Azay-le-Rideau, a sub-region of Touraine, just east of Chinon.
The silex (flint) soils of this region are ideal for Chenin Blanc, and the duo's Blanc Chenin is truly a mesmerizing bottle of white wine. Produced from two old sites, one planted in the 1950's and the other in the early 1990's, the finished wine is powerful, complex, and while totally delicious now, it will age and improve over the next decade.
2022 Domaine des Hauts Baigneux 'Blanc Chenin' -- Here's why you should buy it:
- Can you say AROMATICALLY INTOXICATING? This stuff smells like Heaven with its caramelized white peach, baked apple, peach skin, Meyer lemon, ginger, and mineral notes.
- It's just as joyous on the palate. Full, totally DRY, and richly textured, the 18 months of lees aging has added a luxurious texture here. The finish, which goes on for 30+ seconds, is oh-so-satisfying.
- Certified organic and made with minimal intervention and just a tiny dose of sulfur, it's one of those wines where you can sense that a ton of TLC went into it.
