Husband and wife Tania and Vincent Careme know their way around the Chenin Blanc grape as well as the various terroirs were it thrives. They own one of the top estates in Vouvray, where Vincent was born, but they also make compelling Chenin Blanc in South Africa, Tania's homeland.
Whereas we've seen steady price increases for Vouvray (and all Loire Valley whites), their Terre Brulee is a prime example of why you should be drinking more South African wines. It boasts wonderful complexity and nuance at a ridiculously low price....for now.
The Careme's 2021 Terre Brulee is fleshy, lush, and downright delightful. As Master of Wine Jancis Robinson put it, "their entire range is a Chenin lover's delight." Despite being somewhat rich, this remains light on its feet due to Chenin's natural acidity and freshness.
Produced from 40+ year-old, dry-farmed vines in rocky soils, this delivers enticing notes of ripe citrus, melon, orange peel, and honeysuckle. Silky yet mouthwatering on the palate, there's nice weight to the citrus and orchard fruit flavors along with a complex minerality on the finish. It is quite sophisticated and classy for the price.
