If you've been shopping with us for a bit, you know we love us some Portuguese wines. The country is putting out some of the top wine values in the world, and I consider the Leziria Castelao to be in a breed all its own. Easy to drink but not a simple fruit bomb, this is the embodiment of a "house red" and then some.
The Castelao grape is native to Portugal, where is also sometimes called Periquita. The grape thrives in the sandy-soiled conditions found near the Tagus River, just inland from Lisbon. While it can sometimes yield quite tannic red wines, the version from Leziria is quite soft, plush, and imminently drinkable.
At just 12.5% ABV, this is that low alcohol summer red you've been looking for. Despite being low in alcohol, this offers up quite assertive and full flavors of ripe berries, spice, and violet. Not too heavy but certainly not light, this is what I will be drinking with grilled fare all summer long.
Pick up a six-pack folks....it's a serious no-brainer, and at less than ten bucks, you'll be amazed at the quality-to-price ratio. Cheers to good drinking and good eating in Asheville!
