Les Heritiers du Comte Lafon Macon Villages 2018

2018 Les Heritiers du Comte Lafon Macon-Villages

Stellar White Burgundy From One Of The Masters!

SOLD OUT

When “Meursault Master” Dominique Lafon decided to set up shop in the Maconnais, about 20 years ago, White Burg lovers everywhere jumped for joy. And after enjoying the estate’s Macon-Villages this past Saturday night, I was jumping with joy too!

This is one of those wines that both transcends and elevates its humble AOC. Whereas much of the wine produced in the Maconnais is mass produced from industrially farmed vineyards, Lafon and his team give this wine the same TLC they give their $100+ Meursaults.

Dominique was the first Cote d’Or producer to invest in the immense potential hidden in these rolling hills by buying higher altitude, old vine parcels with the intent of letting this beautiful terroir reach its full potential. He was also one of the first to convert all of his vineyards to biodynamic/organic farming.

And in case you’ve not heard, Vintage 2018 was nearly perfect throughout the Burgundy region. Some are even comparing it to the mythical 1947 vintage! I can attest to the quality present in this wine. From 30+ year old vines, this is a multi-parcel blend from vineyards planted on deep clay/limestone. Fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged for 8 months in large, old, neutral oak barrels, this is one of those wines that speaks to me.

There’s a lot going on here! Intense aromas of green apple, pear, white peach, white flowers, flint and spice lead into a lively, energetic, and beautifully textured palate. The flavors mimic the aromas, with great intensity and a long and very satisfying finish. Snag some of this to enjoy now, but do your best to stash some to enjoy with the Thanksgiving meal this year.

I could keep going on this one, but I need to wrap it up. If you’ve enjoyed the other White Burgs I’ve endorsed, I guarantee you’ll love this one.
