This wonderful, certified organic and biodynamic estate was founded in the 11th century by the monks of Saint Cecile d'Estagel Abbaye. Situated in Costieres de Nimes, in the southern-most reaches of the Rhone Valley, today the winery is run by 9th and 10th generation growers and vignerons Jerome and Tanguy Castillon.
Their primely situated vineyards are south-facing, capturing maximum sunshine, and the terroir is similar to Chateauneuf du Pape. I'm talking about the rounded river rocks, aka galets, that you also find in Chateauneuf. Add to that the fact that the blend here is led by Mourvedre, the classic, dark fruited grape of Bandol, and it all adds up to a hearty, boisterous, and satisfying Southern Rhone that should sell for twice the price.
A blend of 40% Mourvedre, 35% Syrah, and 25% Grenache from 50-75 year-old vines, we bought 7 of the 20 cases that our friends at the Haw River Wine Man brought in for the vintage. I HIGHLY recommend it, and I suspect it will go fast.
2021 Chateau L'Ermite D'Auzan Saint Cecile Costieres de Nimes
Why should you buy it?
- Because it's an incredible value! With the opulence of a Chateauneuf and the spicy and savory character of a Bandol Rouge, it just overflows with classic and traditional Southern French character.
- Deeply colored, nearly opaque in the glass, this leads with sensational aromas of dark fruits, black pepper, truffle, and garrigue. Ripe, bold, and spicy/savory on the palate, it is full-flavored yet juicy and supple.
- Costieres de Nimes is the southern-most part of the Rhone Valley, and the red wines from top estates have long been called "Poor Person's Chateauneuf." This one really lives up to that reputation!
- At less than $20 (while it's on deal), this will blow minds and make heads spin, especially if you have some experience drinking Southern French reds.
If you've shopped with Table Wine for any length of time, you know my Rhone palate is pretty damn good. Trust me, this one delivers the goods, easily drinking like a $30+ Southern Rhone.
