As I said in the opening paragraph, Vintage 2015 was a great one throughout Tuscany. Wine Spectator said, “The growing season brought a warm summer and just enough rain for promising Sangiovese.” After an incredibly challenging vintage in 2014, producers were rewarded with near perfect conditions in 2015.
It really shows in this wine! This one is brand new to the United States, so I found it challenging to find much online information about the wine. You’ll just have to trust me and my tasting notes.
A blend of Sangiovese with bits of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine is fermented in stainless steel and then aged for 6 months in new and used oak barrels. It pours a dark ruby color and the nose is all warm cherry, strawberry, raspberry and spice.
On the palate, the wine is fuller than most Sangioveses in this price range, but it is silky smooth, rounded, and easy to drink with or without food. The flavors of ripe berry fruit are almost sweet, but there’s just enough acidity to give this one lift and freshness.
Overall, the Barbanera Ser Passo is a super classy, stylish, and highly likeable wine — I can see why some stores are getting $20+ for it. I know my write-ups can sound to good to be true, but this one is the real deal. We just received 20 cases, and I predict we’ll sell out by the end of the week.
